Plant Pathology
Our plant pathology research focuses on the fungal disease verticillium wilt. Symptoms of verticillium wilt disease in mint include horizontal leaf curling, referred to as "crescent leaf," and yellowing of leaves - "chlorosis" to plant pathologists.

Verticillium wilt symptoms are exhibited by the plant on the right. The plant on the left is a control.

rating scale
We have screened USDA accessions of Mentha longifolia for resistance to the fungal disease Verticillium wilt.
The pictures to the right represent symptom levels to which particular numerical ratings are assigned.
Some symptoms, including red leaf color, vary among mint accessions.
This rating scale is based on a protocol
given to us by Dennis Johnson at
Washington State University.
